It's the most common thing parents tell us, and it's almost never about effort. Usually, it's one of these
Answers that don't fully address the question, rushed longer responses and poor timing cost marks they could have earned.
They know the content, but struggle when 13+ questions ask them to apply it, explain it or write at length.
Revising several Common Entrance subjects at once leaves gaps in the papers that matter most for their target school.
More tutoring hours won't solve the problem if you're working on the wrong things. That's why we start by finding out exactly what's holding your child back.
At Edmento, lessons start from £15 an hour. Across the UK, the cost of a 13+ tutor depends on the tutor's experience, how many papers your child is sitting, how much exam preparation is involved and what support comes with the lessons.
1-to-1 lessons cost more than group tuition, but every minute goes on your child's gaps. You won't be asked to buy a large block of lessons before you know the tutor is right: start with the free consultation and a trial.

We test, track and adjust until progress shows in timed practice papers.
No random tutoring. No guessing. Just a clear plan.

Your child meets a matched 13+ tutor who assesses their level, identifies gaps and starts tackling the gaps holding them back.

Get clear feedback on knowledge gaps, accuracy, speed and lost marks, with a focused plan to improve their 13+ results.

A child securing a Common Entrance pass and a child sitting for an academic scholarship require completely different tutoring strategies.
We target that to get them exam-ready.
Building confidence
We build the core skills calmly, close the gaps and get your child used to the format before the pressure builds.
Securing the pass
We prioritise the subjects and topics that matter most for their target school’s pass mark and make every paper count.
Aiming high
We raise the challenge. Harder questions, extended answers, wider reading and the independent thinking scholarship papers reward.
Let’s find what’s standing between them and the top marks
Yes, because every lesson can focus on the exact areas costing your child marks, rather than following the pace and needs of a whole class.
Spend more time on the subjects and question types they struggle with and less on what they already know.
Whether they’re aiming for a solid pass or a scholarship, teaching starts from where they are now.
Apply each topic to the Common Entrance, pre-test and scholarship question styles they’ll actually face.
Spot where their method, reasoning or written answer went wrong before the same mistake happens again.
Your child can ask questions, revisit difficult topics and get explanations until they understand.
Lessons focus on the papers, pass marks and interview expectations of their target senior schools.
Yes. Online 13+ tutoring can be as effective as face-to-face when lessons are interactive. Tutor and student work together on a shared digital whiteboard, so every line of working and written answer is visible, and past-paper questions are tackled step by step together.
At Edmento, lessons start from £15 an hour. Across the UK, 13+ tutoring costs vary with the tutor's experience, how many subjects your child is sitting and how much exam preparation and support is included. We start with a free consultation and a trial lesson, with no large upfront package, so you can judge the value before committing.
It usually is when lessons target the specific reasons your child is losing marks. General revision across many subjects rarely moves results on its own; a tutor who diagnoses gaps, prioritises the papers that matter and gives feedback on your child's own work can. The trial lesson lets you judge before committing.
The 13+ is the entry route many independent senior schools use for pupils joining in Year 9. Depending on the school, it can involve a pre-test in Year 6 or 7, ISEB Common Entrance exams in Year 8, the school's own papers, scholarship exams and an interview.
A pre-test is usually taken in Year 6 or 7 and often leads to a conditional offer. Common Entrance is sat later, typically in Year 8, and confirms the place. Many schools use both, so preparation needs to cover the reasoning and core skills for the pre-test as well as the subject knowledge for Common Entrance.
Many families start in Year 6 so there's time to prepare for any pre-test and build subject knowledge steadily before Common Entrance in Year 8. Later starts are possible but need a more focused plan around the papers that matter most.
We support English, Maths and Science, along with languages and humanities subjects such as French, Spanish, History and Geography. We also help with the reasoning skills tested in pre-tests and with interview preparation. Tell us which papers your child is sitting and we'll plan around them.
Once a week per priority subject suits most children, often increasing in the months before pre-tests or Common Entrance. We'll suggest a plan based on your child's starting point, the subjects they're sitting and their target schools.
Yes. Scholarship papers ask for deeper understanding, extended answers and confident handling of unfamiliar questions. We stretch your child beyond the Common Entrance syllabus and practise the thinking and writing that scholarship examiners look for.
It can, though no honest tutor guarantees a result. Progress comes from fixing the specific gaps and technique problems that cost marks, practising past papers under timed conditions and getting feedback. We track progress and share updates, so you can see whether it's working.
Yes. We help your child talk confidently about their interests, reason aloud through unfamiliar questions and give thoughtful, natural answers rather than rehearsed ones.
Lessons happen live, 1-to-1, over video. Tutor and student work on a shared digital whiteboard, so every line of working and written answer is visible, and past-paper questions are tackled step by step together. Your child needs a laptop or tablet and a quiet space; many families find it easier than travelling to lessons.
We match on the subjects and exams your child is sitting, their target schools, their needs and their personality. After the free assessment we suggest a tutor, and your child has a trial lesson so you can both judge the fit before committing.
Yes. You can receive lesson feedback and progress updates, and your Student Success Manager is available whenever you have a question or concern.
